Sperm preservation is the freezing of sperm for future use.Sometimes medical treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, are necessary for a man’s health but have the undesired consequence of damaging sperm to the point where having children is not possible. In these cases, sperm preservation before starting treatment can ensure fertility until the man is ready to have a family. Some men may choose to preserve their sperm to protect themselves in the even of an injury or illness. Other reasons for sperm preservation may be: vasectomy, hormone replacement therapy, or medications.
Men have an easier time with fertility preservation since it is far simpler to obtain sperm than eggs for freezing. However, some men are so ill or so young that they cannot produce a specimen for freezing.
