ICSI is an incredibly important technique for male infertility treatment. It turns out that once the sperm is properly placed in the egg, the sperm and egg know what to do to transform into an embryo. The technique is powerful, because only a single sperm is necessary for each egg and the sperm does not need to be able to enter the egg on its own power.
Many people have worried about the unnatural selection of sperm but both short term and long term studies have provided reassuring information that the children are normal.
Here is a movie from our embryology lab (directed by Dr Klaus Wiemer, PhD) demonstrating the process.
