Dr. Opsahl graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 with a degree in Biology, and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina, in 1978. He completed his internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology before serving as the Medical Officer of the USS Nassau, LHA-4. After sea duty, he completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, MD. He served as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan for two years.

After completing fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology at Walter Reed Army Hospital and the National Institutes of Health in 1987, Dr. Opsahl served the remainder of his naval career at the NNMC in Bethesda, MD as Director of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences while serving at NNMC Bethesda.

Dr. Opsahl retired from the Navy in 1994 and practiced medicine at the Genetics & IVF Institute (GIVF) in Fairfax, Virginia for ten years before relocating to the pacific northwest. Dr. Opsahl then co-founded Northwest Center for Reproductive Sciences (NCRS) in 2004 and remained there until it was acquired by Seattle Reproductive Medicine (SRM) in January 2011. Dr. Opsahl left SRM start POMA Fertility in 2013.

Dr. Opsahl is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and the Pacific Coast Fertility Society. He has authored over 25 scientific papers and served as an ad hoc reviewer for the medical journals Fertility and Sterility and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

His 44 years of experience as a specialist in women’s health and infertility provides wide experience in all aspects of assisted reproduction. Dr. Opsahl emphasizes patient education to achieve informed consent. Dr. Opsahl embraces family building for everyone including the LGBTQIA+ community, women, and men who require fertility preservation and family balancing gender selection.

Dr. Opsahl has been married for 40 years and has twin sons, a journalist, and a graphic artist. He has a dog and two cats and supports his wife’s passion of working with animal rescue groups. He is an avid golfer, meaning he is enthusiastic beyond his skill level!
